How Dulcie met her Cubano

In a very smoky interior with black and white floor tiles and plump couches with velvet cushions under crystal chandeliers, the old flaky walls are adorned with mirrors and catholic relics. A feast waits on the white table cloths and the wine glasses and cutlery sparkle. The air is warm and filled with the sensual fragrance of Jasmine. A sad and sentimental tango starts playing in the background, and then the rest of this tale about love is history. This is old Cuba where Dulcie met her Cubano...

Welcome to the platform where we describe our love for food, travelling and entertaining. We live in Johannesburg under Jacaranda trees. We love cooking and spending time together.

Dulcie is an alias and not my real name, but who cares! Dulcie - short for Dulcinea, which means sweet. Like  the fictional character Dulcinea del Toboso in Miguel de Cervantes' novel Don Quixote, she is a strong character in real life.

I like to refer to my sexy and handsome partner as Cubano. We are fused together in the passionate alliance we call Dulcie & Cubano.

I have a deep connection with Italy and everything Italian and this can easily be mistaken for an obsession. Italy will always be in my heart and I dream of living in Venice. But I also like to explore food from different cultures.

Cubano could have been a Cuban, but he is not. With his Mediterranean features and unshaven face the exclamation “Mama Mia!” would be in order. He demands attention and as a bonus he has an excellent sense of humour. Cubano is rarely ever seen without his Cuban espresso which he prepares by adding the sugar at the time when the brewed coffee is dripped into the cup. In essence Cubano is sweet and strong, just like his Cafe Cubano.

We love our kitchen that looks like it has been transported from Havana to Johannesburg. The kitchen gets really steaming hot, occasionally also due to the cooking that is taking place. We use herbs and veggies from our own garden together with other fresh ingredients in our cooking which we enjoy sharing with friends.

Our motto is “Mangiare bene, stare bene” which means “Eat well, be well”! Come and appreciate the simple things in life with us.
